Using sunlight, plants incorporate atmospheric carbon dioxide into sugars and use these sugars to make
their important plant components, such as cell walls, proteins, and oils. When a plant dies, these
components are broken down at varying rates by soil microbes and the captured carbon is released
back into the atmosphere.
